I had not really worried about my carpets before but I am beginning to see wear appearing where the computer chairs tend to rub on them when people roll back and forth with them, on the wheels. I do not want those parts of the carpet to get worn out and so I have been looking at getting some chair mats to help to protect it. I think that it will really help to preserve the carpet and if we decide to move the furniture around, which we tend to do from time to time, we will not have a nasty worn piece of carpet to have to try to hide with something such as a rug or piece of furniture.

I have found a chair mat which looks the right colour to work with my room but I have been looking at it on line and am not sure if the colour will be exactly right as you never know how well the monitor colours reflect the actual colours of the items. I guess I will just have to order it to find out and I can always send it back if it does not match the carpet exactly.

I have 15 carpeted stairs from the foyer doorway to the first level.I installed hardwood laminate (tannish colored cherry laminate), but the steps can not have laminate (according to handmen/home depot). my handyman recommends I replace the pine with oak, but I can’t afford that. he can stain them but doesn’t recommend it. the pine under the carpet looks solid and been no problem for over 5 years.

what should I do? can I stain the pine stairs? whats the worst that can happen?

I wonder why they said you can’t have laminate on the stairs. We do on two flights and it hasn’t been a problem. Some people believe it will be slippery, but we haven’t noticed that.

You certainly could stain and poly the pine. I might worry that the pine would be prone to wear and tear as it is a soft wood.
