Soon, “smart” surveillance system to identify suspicious, lost people
Monday, December 29th, 2008A ’smart’ surveillance system that will help security watchdogs to recognize whether a person on the street is acting suspiciously or appears to be lost is being developed by engineers.
A team of engineers including James Davis and Karthik Sankaranarayanan from Ohio State University aims to develop a networked system of “smart” video cameras that will let surveillance officers observe a wide area quickly and efficiently. Computers will carry much of the workload.
“In my lab, we’ve always tried to develop technologies that would improve officers’ situational awareness, and now we want to give that same kind of awareness to computers,” said Davis, an associate professor of computer science and engineering at Ohio State University.
“We aim to analyse and model the behaviour patterns of people and vehicles moving through the scene, rather than attempting to determine the identity of people.
“We are trying to automatically learn what typical activity patterns exist in the monitored area, and then have the system look for atypical patterns that may signal a person of interest — perhaps someone engaging in nefarious behaviour or a person in need of help,” he added.
The engineers claim to have completed the first three phases of the project: they have one software algorithm that creates a wide-angle video panorama of a street scene, another that maps the panorama onto a high-resolution aerial image of the scene, and a method for actively tracking a selected target.
This software takes a series of snapshots from every direction within a camera’s field of view, and combines them into a seamless panorama.
It creates a 360-degree high-resolution view of a camera’s whole viewspace, as if someone were looking at the entire scene at once. The view resembles that of a large fish-eye lens.
As a person walks across a scene, the computer can calculate exactly where the person is on the panorama and aerial map. That information can then be used to instruct a camera to follow him or her automatically using the camera’s pan-and-tilt control.
With this system, it will be possible for the computer to “hand-off” the tracking task between cameras as the person moves in and out of view of different cameras.
His team is now working on the next step in the research: determining who should be followed.
The system won’t rely on traditional profiling methods, he said. A person’s race or sex or general appearance won’t matter. What will matter is where the person goes, and what they do.
“If you’re doing something strange, we want to be able to detect that, and figure out what’s going on,” he said.
To first determine what constitutes normal behaviour, they plan to follow the paths of many people who walk through a particular scene over a long period of time. A line tracing each person’s trajectory will be saved to a database.
Davis believes that system can also pick up people who are lost. “Humans can pick out a lost person really well,” he said. “I believe you could build an algorithm that would also be able to do it.”c

Power of PowerPoint
Sunday, December 28th, 2008Whenever there is a seminar or a symposium we immediately think of PowerPoint presentations. Power point presentations are very commonly used nowadays for presentations and the software has its own advantages. We always feel pictures talk more than words. PowerPoint presentations allow people to depict their ideas in sequence of pictures displayed as slides. Power point presentation need not be always picture but can also contain the subjects in points which enable people to read it clearly than giving them in congested paragraphs. One more added merit is the animation feature of the PowerPoint presentations where we just need to set the timing after which the slides should change and it is done automatically. Also there are styles and fonts and templates available already based on the presentation and situation where you are going to present it. PowerPoint presentation makes the presentation job easier. Nowadays sophisticated multimedia facilities are available along with Power Point presentations to make life easier. You can add pictures and quotes from books and add it directly to the presentations and make it more informative instead of typing each and every word or drawing the picture all by yourself. You just need to add your creativity and ideas to make the presentations more lively and interactive.
Fast Cars Basics
Saturday, December 27th, 2008Cars are just cool. They are truly a magnificent piece of technology. They can be slow and safe vehicles for soccer moms in some incarnations and incredible speed machines in others. Fast cars are really interesting for just about anyone. Even people who aren’t mechanically inclined should find the field an interesting thing to study. Learning about the intricacies of car customization is one fun hobby that can have some great products. There isn’t much better than having your own fast car.
If you are really interested but don’t know where to start, then you can look at a few places online. A number of store are centered around hot cars and they have all of the parts and pieces that you could eventually need. One of the best ways to learn is to merely immerse yourself in the world and find out everything that you can. This will also make it easier to then jump into discussions with slightly more experienced car buffs. Knowing the basics is always a good idea.
Once you have the basics down, you should be ready to go. You can then look around the website for tips and tricks on ways to customize an existing car, or you could even start looking for your own hot rod to start working on. The choice is yours.
Oracle still looks strong despite 2Q earnings dip
Friday, December 19th, 2008Oracle Corp.’s earnings are weakening for the first time in years, but the business software maker still may be in reasonably good shape despite the economy’s terrible condition.
After buying dozens of smaller rivals since 2004, Oracle has assembled a lucrative line of recurring revenue from product updates to help tide it over even if its sales of new software licenses deteriorate in the deepening recession.
Oracle’s maintenance contracts account for about half of its business, generating more than $11 billion in annual revenue — a cushion that so for has enabled Oracle to avoid the mass layoffs and other austerity measures being imposed at many other technology companies.
“From an investment perspective, I can’t think of a better place to be hiding out than Oracle in this uncertain technology environment,” said Pacific Crest Securities analyst Brendan Barnicle.
Some investors seemed to agree late Thursday after Oracle’s second quarter earnings mirrored analyst estimates and management felt confident enough about the next few months to provide guidance in line with Wall Street’s projections. Oracle shares gained 49 cents, or nearly 3 percent, in extended trading after finishing the regular session at $16.61, down 13 cents.
The Redwood Shores-based company said it earned $1.3 billion, or 25 cents per share in the three months ended in November. The net income dipped by $7 million from the same time last year while the earnings per share remained the same.
Although it was negligible, the erosion marked Oracle’s first quarterly profit decline in three years.
But Oracle’s profit in the latest quarter would have risen by 10 percent, if not for wild currency swings driven by the biggest financial crisis since the Great Depression.
Investors focus on another number anyway — Oracle’s earnings after subtracting expenses for employee stock compensation and its acquisition spree.
Excluding those factors, Oracle said it would made 34 cents per share, matching the average estimate among analysts polled by Thomson Reuters.
Oracle’s revenue of $5.61 billion, up 6 percent from last year, didn’t live up to analyst expectations. On average, analysts had projected revenue of $5.84 billion.
Oracle’s sales of new product licenses — a key measure of a software maker’s health — also slipped. Software sales totaled $1.63 billion, down 3 percent from last year.
In September, management had predicted that its software license would rise anywhere from 2 percent to 12 percent.
But that forecast didn’t envision the dollar rising as rapidly as it did against the euro and other key currencies during October and November after a string of failures and other troubles at major banks triggered a financial panic.
Besides hurting its international sales, the stronger dollar had the effect of exposing more of Oracle’s sales to higher U.S. tax rates — a factor that deflated the company’s earnings.
“Now, of course, obviously currency was not the only news going on in the quarter in the outside world and yet we feel just extremely good about our results,” Safra Catz, Oracle’s co-president, told analysts in a Thursday conference call.
Oracle projected adjusted earnings of 34 cents to 36 cents per share in the current quarter ending in February. Analysts, on average, expect 34 cents per share. The company anticipates its revenue in the current quarter will rise 8 percent to 11 percent, also falling within the range of analyst expectations.
If currencies remain at the same level in the current quarter as they were in the prior year, Oracle believes its sales of new licenses should range anywhere from a 2 percent decrease to an 8 percent increase.
Other major technology companies have been laying off workers and trimming expenses in other areas to shore up profits, but Oracle isn’t making any radical changes yet. In another bullish sign, Oracle is still expanding its payroll. The company ended November with 86,657 employees, adding about 1,500 workers since August.
Under fire from investors, Satyam calls off Maytas deal
Thursday, December 18th, 2008Bowing to pressure from shareholders, Satyam Computer Services Limited Wednesday called off the deal to acquire Maytas Properties and take 51 percent stake in Maytas Infra for $1.5 billion.
India’s fourth largest software services provider said it reversed the decision in deference to the wishes of investors. The management said they were surprised by the market reaction.
The company in a statement said it has decided not to go ahead with the deal in the light of feedback received from the investor community.
‘We have been surprised by market reaction to this decision even though we were quite positive about the merits of the acquisition. However, in deference to the views expressed by many investors, we have decided to call off these acquisitions,’ said Satyam chairman B. Ramalinga Raju.
The company had Tuesday announced that it was acquiring Maytas Properties for $1.3 billion (Rs.62.28 billion) and taking 51 percent stake in Maytas Infra for $.0.3 billion (Rs.14.37 billion).
Both the firms were promoted by family members of Ramalinga Raju.
The market had reacted strongly to the deal. Satyam’s American Depository Receipts (ADR), listed on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), fell by over 50 percent from $12.50 to $5.70 Tuesday. The company reportedly lost over $2 billion in 60 minutes.
The deal dealt a blow to Satyam’s 210,000 shareholders, as a majority of them felt that the deal was unethical and aimed to bail out firms owned by Ramalinga Raju’s sons.
They were not convinced by his argument that the acquisition would help Satyam diversify its business and tap the growing opportunities in infrastructure and real estate sectors.
Obama left with little time to curb global warming
Tuesday, December 16th, 2008When Bill Clinton took office in 1993, global warming was a slow-moving environmental problem that was easy to ignore. Now it is a ticking time bomb that President-elect Barack Obama can’t avoid.
Since Clinton’s inauguration, summer Arctic sea ice has lost the equivalent of Alaska, California and Texas. The 10 hottest years on record have occurred since Clinton’s second inauguration. Global warming is accelerating. Time is close to running out, and Obama knows it.
“The time for delay is over; the time for denial is over,” he said on Tuesday after meeting with former Vice President Al Gore, who won a Nobel Peace Prize for his work on global warming. “We all believe what the scientists have been telling us for years now that this is a matter of urgency and national security and it has to be dealt with in a serious way.”
But there are powerful political and economic realities that must be quickly overcome for Obama to succeed. Despite the urgency he expresses, it’s not at all clear that he and Congress will agree on an approach during a worldwide financial crisis in time to meet some of the more crucial deadlines.
Obama is pushing changes in the way Americans use energy, and produce greenhouse gases, as part of what will be a massive economic stimulus. He called it an opportunity “to re-power America.”
After years of inaction on global warming, 2009 might be different. Obama replaces a president who opposed mandatory cuts of greenhouse gas pollution and it appears he will have a willing Congress. Also, next year, diplomats will try to agree on a major new international treaty to curb the gases that promote global warming.
“We need to start in January making significant changes,” Gore said in a recent telephone interview with The Associated Press. “This year coming up is the most important opportunity the world has ever had to make progress in really solving the climate crisis.”
Scientists are increasingly anxious, talking more often and more urgently about exceeding “tipping points.”
“We’re out of time,” Stanford University biologist Terry Root said. “Things are going extinct.”
U.S. emissions have increased by 20 percent since 1992. China has more than doubled its carbon dioxide pollution in that time. World carbon dioxide emissions have grown faster than scientists’ worst-case scenarios. Methane, the next most potent greenhouse gas, suddenly is on the rise again and scientists fear that vast amounts of the trapped gas will escape from thawing Arctic permafrost.
The amount of carbon dioxide in Earth’s atmosphere has already pushed past what some scientists say is the safe level.
In the early 1990s, many scientists figured that the world was about a century away from a truly dangerous amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, said Mike MacCracken, who was a top climate scientist in the Clinton administration. But as they studied the greenhouse effect further, scientists realized that harmful changes kick in at far lower levels of carbon dioxide than they thought. Now some scientists, but not all, say the safe carbon dioxide level for Earth is about 10 percent below what it is now.
Gore called the situation “the equivalent of a five-alarm fire that has to be addressed immediately.”
Scientists fear that what’s happening with Arctic ice melt will be amplified so that ominous sea level rise will occur sooner than they expected. They predict Arctic waters could be ice-free in summers, perhaps by 2013, decades earlier than they thought only a few years ago.
In December 2009, diplomats are charged with forging a new treaty replacing the 1997 Kyoto Protocol, which set limits on greenhouse gases, and which the United States didn’t ratify. This time European officials have high expectations for the U.S. to take the lead. But many experts don’t see Congress passing a climate bill in time because of pressing economic and war issues.
“The reality is, it may take more than the first year to get it all done,” Senate Energy Committee Chairman Jeff Bingaman, D-N.M., said recently.
Complicating everything is the worldwide financial meltdown. Frank Maisano, a Washington energy specialist and spokesman who represents coal-fired utilities and refineries, sees the poor economy as “a huge factor” that could stop everything. That’s because global warming efforts are aimed at restricting coal power, which is cheap. That would likely mean higher utility bills and more damage to ailing economies that depend on coal production, he said.
Obama is stacking his Cabinet and inner circle with advocates who have pushed for deep mandatory cuts in greenhouse gas pollution and even with government officials who have achieved results at the local level.
The President-elect has said that one of the first things he will do when he gets to Washington is grant California and other states permission to control car tailpipe emissions, something the Bush administration denied.
And though congressional action may take time, the incoming Congress will be more inclined to act on global warming. In the House, liberal California Democrat Henry Waxman’s unseating of Michigan Rep. John Dingell — a staunch defender of Detroit automakers — as head of the House Energy and Commerce Committee was a sign that global warming will be on the fast track.
Senate Environment and Public Works Chairman Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., vowed to push two global warming bills starting in January: one to promote energy efficiency as an economic stimulus and the other to create a cap-and-trade system to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from utilities. “The time is now,” she wrote in a Dec. 8 letter to Obama.
Mother Nature, of course, is oblivious to the federal government’s machinations. Ironically, 2008 is on pace to be a slightly cooler year in a steadily rising temperature trend line. Experts say it’s thanks to a La Nina weather variation. While skeptics are already using it as evidence of some kind of cooling trend, it actually illustrates how fast the world is warming.
The average global temperature in 2008 is likely to wind up slightly under 57.9 degrees Fahrenheit, about a tenth of a degree cooler than last year. When Clinton was inaugurated, 57.9 easily would have been the warmest year on record. Now, that temperature would qualify as the ninth warmest year.
