Exxon Mobil 2Q profit sets US record, shares fall

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

Exxon Mobil Corp. reported second-quarter earnings of $11.68 billion Thursday, the biggest profit from operations ever by any U.S. corporation, but the results were well short of Wall Street expectations and its shares fell.

The world’s largest publicly traded oil company said net income for the April-June period came to $2.22 a share, up from $10.26 billion, or $1.83 a share, a year ago.

Revenue rose 40 percent to $138.1 billion from $98.4 billion in the year-earlier quarter.

Excluding an after-tax charge of $290 million related to an Exxon Valdez court settlement, earnings amounted to $11.97 billion, or $2.27 per share.

Analysts on average expected Exxon Mobil to earn $2.52 a share on revenue of $144 billion, according to a survey by Thomson Financial. The estimates typically exclude one-time items.

The record-setting results were largely expected, given that crude prices in the second quarter were nearly double what they were a year ago. Natural gas prices were significantly higher too.

But investors expected even bigger profits Thursday, especially after Europe’s Royal Dutch Shell reported a 33 percent jump in second-quarter earnings to $11.6 billion, which fell just shy of Exxon’s own record earnings from 2007.

Exxon Mobil shares fell $2.81, or 3.3 percent, to $81.57 in morning trading.

Setting U.S. profit records has become commonplace for Irving-based Exxon Mobil. The $11.68 billion topped its own U.S. record of $11.66 billion, posted in the fourth quarter of last year. Right behind that was the $10.9 billion it reported to start 2008.

Exxon Mobil owns the record for at least the top six most-profitable quarters for a U.S. company, as well as the largest annual profit.

The company, which produces 3 percent of the world’s oil, got its biggest boost from its exploration and production arm, where earnings rose 68 percent to $10.01 billion from $5.95 billion a year ago. The main driver was record crude prices, partially offset by lower sales volumes and higher operating costs.

Once again, Exxon Mobil’s results revealed a troubling trend at the heart of its business.

Production on an oil-equivalent basis fell 8 percent from a year ago — a significant blow for a company that generates more than two-thirds of its earnings from oil and gas production. That follows an opening quarter of 2008 when the company said overall production fell 5.6 percent from a year ago.

Excluding last year’s loss of its Venezuelan assets, a labor strike in Nigeria and lower volumes because of production-sharing contracts, Exxon said production was down about 3 percent in the most-recent quarter.

Like its competitors, Exxon Mobil said it took a beating from lower global refining margins. Earnings from refining and marketing fell 54 percent in the quarter to $1.55 billion.

For the first six months of 2008, Exxon Mobil said it earned $22.57 billion, or $4.25 a share, from $19.54 billion, or $3.45 a share, in the first half of 2007. Revenue rose to $254.9 billion from $185.5 billion.

Is the American economy heading for the same disaster that hit Japan in the early 90s?

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

I think the american disaster might be worse than the one in Japan.

Japanese had and still have one of the highest saving rates in the world. They save a higher percentage of their income than people in most other countries save.

Whereas americans have one of the lowest saving rates in the world. A great many americans have huge debts and their net worth is negative.

The Japanese were in a lot better position to weather their economic downturn than most americans are at the present time.

But there are some similarities between the Japanese crisis and the present one in USA. Just like in Japan before, the US government is doing its best to prevent insolvent banks from failing and thus eliminating bad debts in the economy. The continued existence of sick banks who might fail at any time will keep the investors and the healthy banks fearful and less willing to take risks in the economy.

How do I get this much protein?

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

I need 200 grams of protein a day. How do I get this much from vegetables?

You definitely do not need 200 grams of protein a day.

Check out these two sites. PLEASE do not force yourself to eat 200 grams of protein a day…..

http://www.veganbodybuilding.com/
This is a calculator for the amount of protein you need:
http://www.indoorclimbing.com/Protein_Re…

—-

That’s a lot of protein. Lentils are a good source of protein at about 25g of protein per 100g. To get your amount of 200g you would need 800g of lentils which is a huge amount, a standard serving being about 80-100g cooked.

Other than beans, vegetables don’t really have that much protein.

NB - these measures are for raw amount - as lentils increase in weight (by about two times) after cooking due to the absorption of water you would actually need to eat a whopping 1600g of cooked lentils!

NB - Brown rice only contains 2g of protein per 100g so isn’t a very good way to increase your protein intake.

——–

200g of protein from veggies? I hope you have a lot of time, and a big appetite.

You could eat 4 cups of peanut butter and hit 200g, but you’d also be taking in about 6,000 calories.

If you want to count vegan protein shakes as “from vegetables” (they are usually rice or pea based), then that would be the most calorie efficient way to get extra protein.

Cramps in between period?

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

Ok this one is weird. I just had my period last week. Ive been having cramps ever since i finished. I just got on birth control two weeks ago and I havn’t had sex or anything so I can’t be pregnant. What the heck is wrong with me?

There is absolutely nothing wrong with you. I never had cramps before I started birth control, but then I started and I’ve experienced some pretty disruptive cramps. It’s fairly common with birth control. It may mean that the birth control is too strong for you, and you should notify your doctor because she may put u on something more milder. But trust me, It’s normal when on birth control.

……………

Probably a reaction to your birth control. It can take up to 3 months for your body to adjust. I had a bad reaction to Trinessa. I got badly bloated, cramped, depressed, developed anxiety and became a totally different person. I had to be taken off of it and put on the Nuva Ring. Good luck to you. If you start feeling depressed or get worried then just call the nurse at your doctor’s office and ask her. I had myself convinced I had ovarian cancer, cervical cancer, STI’s, brain tumors and everything else. Birth Control Pills are HORMONE’S. Those moods and problems women have going through menopause…those can happen at any age when you mess with your hormones. You may end up needing a different type. Each person reacts differently

…………

I get them too, its normal.. sometimes it could from having indigestion & many other reasons, nothing to be worried about unless its severe pain & you feel like you should seek medical help. Then i could recommend taking a trip to the doctors!
hope that helped.

Is the Apocalypse near?

The Long Count Calendar of the Ancient Mayans ends on Dec 21 2012. There isn’t much information regarding what the Mayans thought would occur in 2012, but the consensus of opinion is that there will be great change. To some people this means a positive, spiritual change. Other, like myself, consider that a catastrophic event may have been predicted. Read more about the Mayan Calendar.

The Mesoamerican Long Count calendar is a non-repeating, vigesimal (base-20) calendar used by several Mesoamerican cultures, most notably the Maya. For this reason, it is sometimes known as the Maya (or Mayan) Long Count calendar. Using a modified vigesimal tally, the Long Count calendar identifies a day by counting the number of days passed since August 11, 3114 BCE (Gregorian).[1] Because the Long Count calendar is non-repeating, it was widely used on monuments.

So the calender will end 12/21/12 and the world will come to an end.

Can anyone tell me any design flaws of Zeppelin airships?

Tuesday, July 29th, 2008

My brother and I are attempting to design a very special class of Zeppelin, but I don’t want to give away too many details out of fear of someone ripping us off. However, before we can do anything, we need to try to perfect the design of the Zeppelin itself and It’s rather difficult to find anything online

Zeppelins like any other aircraft have to be engineered with quite a lot of things you have to take into consideration. The Hindenburg and Graf Zeppelin were designes that evolved over many years. None of the too had any serious design flaws. They used Hydrogen but the Graf Zeppelin flew many years without any accidents.
Main issues are ground handling, handling at low speeds, handling in severe weather.
I would suggest that you connect with the Colorado Airship List http://spot.colorado.edu/~dziadeck/airsh… it’s an email mailing list with lots of highly experienced engineers on it. Many have worked on the Skyships and the new Zeppelin NT. The Zeppelin NT I see as current state of the art with the best design on the market. It has it’s flaws, for example the heavy internal structure but its a great airship.
Also you are welcome to present you designs on the Airshipworld Blog or in our Forum the Blog you find at http://airshipworld.blogspot.com/ and the Forum at http://www.airshipworld.info/forum.html

How Can I get along better with my family?

Monday, July 28th, 2008

My family is normally loud, and outgoing, and stuff like that. But i’m more quiet, and less outgoing unless i’m around my two best friends.
My family is really into military & medical stuff. But i’m into music and songwriting and stuff like that.

Because i’m so different from my parents and brother i’m normally the center of a joke. My dad likes to make fun of the way i have my hair and the clothes i wear, and he likes to make fun of my friends A LOT.
I dont like when he makes fun of me and my friends and normally i just wanna yell “SHUT UP! LEAVE ME AND MY FRIENDS ALONE! I HATE YOU!” but i know if i say any “back talk” my mom yells at me and tells me to shut up.
and normally the “jokes” are really mean and hurtful and some even made me cry before.
And my parents are the kind you sit down and say “You’re hurting me feelings” to.

What should i do? i feel so left out in everything my family does.

you know what when you are at the dinner table and they do that you do this and say..
“you know what i am sick and tired of you making fun of my friends because they are my friends and i like them and i like to write songs and play music and who cares if i am different from you guys i am still your daughter and still in your family and nothing can ever change that and stop making fun of my hair and clothes cause i like the way i look and if you dont well thats how its going to be.”
say it in A CALMLY VOICE AND DO NOT DO IT IF YOU DONT WANT TO SAY THAT YOU CAN MAKE IT DIFFERENT AND MORE NICER IF YOU WANT UOU CAN CHANGE THE WORDS TOO SO YA

………………

Being alone is a scary thing, isn’t it? Especially at home…
Tell your parents how you feel when they make harsh comments about you. It isn’t right that they’re making fun of who you are- what you wear, the things you like.

If you feel like it’s climbing up to verbal abuse, you can call a teen help hotline or talk to your friends about it.

…………..

talk to them, communicate your feelings and let them take you seriously, no one deserves to be treated this way especially at home.

if you’d like to, make fun of them and see how they like it.

but two wrongs don’t make a right, just let them understand how you feel and your parents should feel some compassion.

………..

Talk to them! I know it’s hard but you just have to. Put them in your situation. Your family will listen to you sooner or later. They are still your family. Don’t be afraid to cry in front of them, because you should let all your feelings out.

…………….

If you can’t sit down and talk, write them a letter, express how you feel and why they should learn to understand you better. You could do two letters for each parent or just one..

Water bottle lids are not recyclable. If you recycle a bottle with it on, they throw the whole bottle away!!!!

Monday, July 28th, 2008

Am I the only one who never knew that? I allways keep the lid on the bottle when I put it in the recycle ben. But on planet green channel (used to be discoveryhome) on TV, they said that at the recycle factory place, if they see a bottle with the lid still on it, they throw the whole bottle away because the don’t have time to take it off. Do all the other green living people allready know that? I just found that out. I can’t believe all these years that I thought I was recycling, all those bottles were just thrown away. How was I suppose to know? I wish I had found out earlier!

Thanks for the information. We don’t buy bottled items as often as we used to because we bought reusable bottles, but we often leave the lids on our bottles when they go in the recycling bin. We squeeze out whatever air we can then put the lid back on so that the bottle takes up less room. We don’t have curbside recycling so it allows us less trips to the bins. I guess I’ll have to start removing the lids when I get there.

——

You can call the local disturber of the water and ask if they want the lid back because I know my brother use to work for Coke and they always dumped the expired product out and recycled the bottle and kept the lids. They recycle them if good.

——

I had no idea but a few years ago decided some plastic caps made great checkers or chips for board games & such.. Then decided to find more uses for caps. They work pretty well at protecting the floor from scratches when used under furniture legs. Also they came in handy as spacers when I stained wood shelving. The cats get a bit of tuna every 2 or 3 months & caps are a nice size without stinking up their regular dish. Sometimes I put small caps in the bottom of a planter before adding potting soil so the water has some drain space.

——

It is far more important to reuse the bottle as many times as possible rather than recycling them after one use.

You should of course keep those bottles out of the sun and away from high temperatures, because they give off estrogenic chemicals when heated or exposed to sunlight. Those estrogenic chemicals do not cause cancer, but they accelerate growth of cancers the way estrogen does…by triggering rapid growth of arteries to supply blood to a cancer.

Rinsing a bottle out after it has been heated or exposed to sunlight will reduce the amount of estrogenic material that you consume by 60% or more.
But keeping this in perspective women do have a higher blood estrogen level every month, and it accelerates cancer only if and when their offsetting progesterone level stays low.

Recycling however is not the solution. It is in repeated reuse.

Small business?

Saturday, July 26th, 2008

hasband and wife opened the 1200 qf /12 seater restaurant for 6 months..No partnership nor corporation form .
Do they need one of them?

No you do not need any of the items mentioned. You simply need a business license from your local city all that most likely will cost under $100. On the license you will list the business as a sole proprietor business with both of your names as owners and you will need a business checking account with both of your names on the account. You can obtain a LLC down the road to protect your assets when the business takes off but it is not needed just make sure you have a great liability insurance policy that protects you from the slip and fall, choke on a bone, burnt my mouth type of BS lawsuits that could potentially arise.
